te Pā

Our Marborough based family owned partner, te Pā is 100% family owned and operated by the MacDonald family. The family live at Blenheim's Wairau Bar, a land mass between the Wairau River and the sea, sort of like an island cut from the mainland by the river and the flood canal. The MacDonald’s can trace their family occupation here since the first Maori canoes landed in what is believed to be New Zealand's earliest-known settlement in the 1300s.

This unique piece of land has always been cultivated, since the earliest Maori crops to later years; where in addition to traditional sheep and beef farming, the MacDonald’s ran a large potato-growing and processing business. A substantial dairying operation followed and then in 2003 they decided to diversify into growing grapes and making wine.

te Pā means our home, our place to the MacDonald family. It refers to the Wairau Bar where the MacDonald’s ancestors landed some 800 years ago. The logo represents the 800 years and is called "Waru Rau" pronounced "Waar oo" "Row" as in rowing.

Chief Vintner, Liam McElhinney is the genius behind some of the world's most iconic Sauvignon Blancs such as Saint Clair and The Ned:

"Our approach is to let the quality of the fruit speak for itself. The result is a range of wines we are proud to bring to the world.” Liam McElhinney."
