The family live at Blenheim's Wairau Bar, a land mass between the Wairau River and the sea, sort of like an island cut from the mainland by the river and the flood canal. The MacDonald’s can trace their family occupation here since the first Maori canoes landed in what is believed to be New Zealand's earliest-known settlement in the 1300s. They have 150 hectares of vineyards and under the leadership of Haysley MacDonald, te Pā has expanded from their award-winning Sauvignon Blanc to the wider range of quality wines they offer you today. te Pā produces Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Oke, Rosé, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Haysley has lived his whole life at te Pā. His parents and grandparents were the same, and his five children are growing up the same way. “They’re being taught the way I was taught,” Haysley reflects of the continuity. He’s very involved in the day-to-day running of te Pā. Liam McElhinney is te Pā chief winemaker. He’s a Blenheim native, and a long-time school friend of Haysley’s. Liam has been in the wine and liquor industry since he was 19 years old. With international winemaking experience, including time spent working in the Rhône Valley, Burgundy and Alsace, as well as consulting roles throughout California, Washington State and Canada, Liam has been the winemaker for every vintage of te Pā since the first release. te Pā means our home, our place to the MacDonald family. It refers to the Wairau Bar where the MacDonald’s ancestors landed some 800 years ago. The logo represents the 800 years and is called "Waru Rau" pronounced "Waar oo" "Row" as in rowing.
